Lecture by David Riff on Olga Chernysheva

On Tuesday, 15 March 2011 at 20.00 hrs, Moscow-based art critic and writer David Riff delivers a lecture on Olga Chernysheva’s practice in which he considers the artist’s repurposing and reinvention of realism in her work, as well as the critical and political implications of this approach, particularly in the context of today’s Russia. At the conclusion of the lecture, BAK marks the release of the fourth BAK Critical Reader, On Horizons: A Critical Reader in Contemporary Art (Utrecht/Rotterdam: BAK and post editions, 2011).

The FORMER WEST digital archive contains several recordings of previous lectures and conversations by David Riff, such as an interview with Cosmin Costinas, and his contributions to the 1st FORMER WEST Congress, Utrecht, 2009 and the FORMER WEST Research Seminar Where the West Ends?, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, 18 March 2010.

Venue: Auditorium, Het Utrechts Archief, Hamburgerstraat 28, Utrecht.

Usufructuaries of earth
Chapter one: exhibition

The exhibition foregrounds the artist’s collaborative approach to bringing together ecological, feminist, and decolonial knowledges and practices that put forward ideologies of usufruct, unhinging property-relations from the idiom of individuated possession and toward forms of common userships between humans and other-than-humans.
