Mapping Histories: Conversing on Visuality and Subalternity

workshop by Lisa Ito

On 14 December 2018 art historian and activist Lisa Ito gives a workshop “Mapping Histories: Conversing on Visuality and Subalternity” as part of the Royal Academy of Art Non Linear Narrative master’s program. The workshop is held at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht in the framework of Propositions #7: Evidentiary Methodsthe public program in the context of the exhibition Forensic Justice. The workshop is informed by the evidentiary method of reenactment and Ito’s experience with the Concerned Artists of the Philippines and the collective’s ongoing response to rising fascism through creating counter-narratives and establishing a broad base of cultural and social participation in the country’s anti-dictatorship struggle. The workshop aims to identify a shared sense of what narratives matter and to discern existing conceptual and visual tools for making sense of such stories and articulating these to publics beyond one’s own circles.

The Non Linear Narrative at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) is a two-year master’s program that merges investigative methods of journalism and forensics with processing technologies of computer science and visual arts.

Usufructuaries of earth
Chapter one: exhibition

The exhibition foregrounds the artist’s collaborative approach to bringing together ecological, feminist, and decolonial knowledges and practices that put forward ideologies of usufruct, unhinging property-relations from the idiom of individuated possession and toward forms of common userships between humans and other-than-humans.
