Wendelien van Oldenborgh

Wendelien van Oldenborgh is an artist who develops works whereby the cinematic format is used as a methodology for production and as the basic language for various forms of presentation. Written and produced in collaboration with participants over different scenarios, these works look at the structures that form and hinder society. Recent solo presentations include Future Footnotes, Significant Other, Vienna, 2018; tono lengua boca, CA2M Madrid, Madrid, 2019–2020; Cinema Olanda, Dutch Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale, Venice, 2017; .As for the future., DAAD gallery, Berlin, 2017; and From Left to Night, The Showroom, London, 2015. Group exhibitions she has recently participated in include … of bread, wine, cars, security and peace, Kunsthall Wien, Vienna, 2020; …and other such stories, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Chicago, 2019; and bauhaus imaginista, HKW Berlin, Berlin, 2019; Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, 2019–2020; and SALT Istanbul, Istanbul, 2020. Van Oldenborgh is a member of the (Dutch) Society for Arts and a recipient of the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Art (2014). A monographic publication, Amateur, was published by Sternberg Press, Berlin; If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam; and The Showroom, London in 2016. Van Oldenborgh lives and works in Berlin (d.d. June 2020).

Fellowship Research Trajectory

Wendelien van Oldenborgh uses film as a form of social production. Her research aims to generate an active knowledge platform that brings together and finds ways to sustain the polyphonic conversations that took place as part of her project Cinema Olanda, an exhibition at the Dutch Pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennale, Venice, 2017 and a series of discursive events and screenings at various locations in the Netherlands in collaboration with curator Lucy Cotter. In parallel, van Oldenborgh investigates the work of Bauhaus architect Lotte Stam-Beese, who was the head architect of Rotterdam’s postwar housing development. In exploring the legacy of a female architect in a male-dominated canon, relevant questions appear when the ideals of postwar Dutch housing meet the reality of colonial-modernist trauma; when designing for equality meets management and policy with biased intent; and when daily livability meets the aesthetic and moral standards of a dominant culture.
