performance artist

Tehching Hsieh is a performance artist best known for his One Year Performances. Using long durations, making art and life simultaneous, he was at the forefront of radical approaches to contemporary art. As a high-school dropout and after serving the army in Taiwan, Hsieh experimented with painting and performance action before he trained to be a seaman to come to the United States in 1974. His first four One Year Performances made Hsieh a regular name in the art scene in New York, whereas the last two pieces, intentionally retreating from the art world, set a tone of sustained invisibility. Recent exhibitions include: Doing Time, 57th Venice Art Biennale, Venice, 2017; and One Year Performance 1980–1981, Tate Modern, London, 2017–2018. Hsieh lives and works in Brooklyn.
