Souleymane Bachir Diagne is a writer, philosopher, and educator. He works as professor in the Department of French and Romance Philology at Columbia University, New York. Diagne received his PhD in philosophy at Sorbonne University, Paris. He taught philosophy for many years at Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar, and at Northwestern University, Chicago. His field of teaching and research include Boolean algebra of logic, history of philosophy, philosophy and Sufism in the Islamic world, and African philosophy and literature. Publications include African Art as Philosophy: Senghor, Bergson, and the Idea of Negritude (2011), The Ink of the Scholars: Reflections on Philosophy in Africa (2016), and Open to Reason: Muslim Philosophers in Conversation with Western Tradition (2018). In 2011 his book Bergson postcolonial: L’élan vital dans la pensée de Senghor et de Mohamed Iqbal (2011, translated as Postcolonial Bergson, 2019) was awarded the Dagnan-Bouveret Prize and the Edouard Glissant Prize. Diagne lives and works in New York and Dakar.
