Shay Raviv

Shay Raviv is a social designer, design researcher, and project initiator. Raviv works on different projects in which culture, design, and creativity are seen as a means to bridge societal gaps. As a design researcher, she brings stories from different perspectives to the center of a creation process and helps different organizations to better understand the people and contexts in which they are innovating. Together with Pim van der Mijl, Raviv co-founded De Voorkamer in Utrecht in 2016, an inclusive meeting space in which the talents of status holders, people living in asylum seekers’ centers, and other local communities are encouraged. Other recent projects include the publication and training program By & For – Designing Inclusive Spaces, training done in the context of Trainings for the Not-Yet (2019–2020) at BAK, Utrecht, 2019; and the installation Chiefs of Waste, as part of the exhibition GEO—DESIGN JUNK: All That Is Solid Melts into Trash, Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven, 2019. Raviv lives and works in Utrecht and Amsterdam.

Fellowship Research Trajectory

For the 2020 BAK Fellowship, nine Fellowships are awarded to practitioners engaged with local communities and struggles for developing a focus on long lasting, mutual support with and through BAK as a public art institution. Former BAK Fellow and artist Jeanne van Heeswijk joins this strand as BAK Associate to conceptually guide the research and work on forms of proximity and building connections.

Next to these nine selected Fellows, six members of the collective freethought have been invited to participate in the 2020 edition of the Fellowship.
