Jean Katambayi Mukendi is an artist and scientist working with technology, mechanics, geometry, and electricity. Throughout his practice—ranging from drawing to “machine” assemblages—he fuses his training as an electrician with impressions from daily life. Driven by complex electrical mechanisms and the concept of recycling, his installations are made of materials such as copper and cardboard, referencing the dynamics of material and economic extraction that are intensifying the economic inequalities between Congolese social classes. Recent solo exhibitions include: Quarantine, Ramiken Gallery, New York, 2021; and intemporal, trampoline Gallery, Antwerp, 2017. Group exhibitions include: The Hum Comes from the Stumuch, Gladstone Gallery, Brussels, 2018; Spurensicherung, Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam, 2017; and Eblouissements, 5th Biennale de Lubumbashi, Lubumbashi, 2017. Together with No Linear Fucking Time artist Femke Herregraven, and others, he is part of On-Trade-Off, artist-led project on energy mythology around lithium. He lives and works in Lubumbashi.
