Denise
Valentine

Denise Valentine is a master storyteller, historical performer, consultant, and founder of The Philadelphia Middle Passage Ceremony & Port Marker Project. Her storytelling performance illustrates the power of story to transcend differences between people, transform negativity, and inspire hope. She is a storyteller of forgotten and neglected histories of the African Diaspora, with special emphasis on the early history of Pennsylvania. Her workshop, Historytelling, integrates archival research, folk heritage, and oral history to demonstrate the role of the expressive cultural arts in creating sustainable communities. Currently, Valentine works as a program facilitator for the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. She also serves as advisor to the curatorial team of the new Early American Art Galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, opening in 2020. Valentine lives and works in Philadelphia.
