As part of the FEINART Lecture Series, BAK&#8217;s general and artistic director Maria Hlavajova presents an online lecture on 3 June 2021, <em>From Art Institution to Community Portal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her talk, Hlavajova speaks from within the practice of <i>instituting otherwise <\/i><\/span>at\u00a0BAK: a process of\u00a0institution making as a continuous succession of interconnected \u201cinstituent\u201d events, driven by the urgencies of the present. Within this process,\u00a0BAK has evolved as a\u00a0<i>base <\/i>where\u00a0various\u00a0forms\u00a0and archives of knowledge\u2014from art to embodied research, theory, lived experience,\u00a0memory,\u00a0and social action\u2014converge around the question\u00a0of <i>how to be together otherwise?<\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span>From within this composition, and in sync with the imperatives of social, cultural, and ecological justice, there emerges a collective practice of\u00a0<em>thinking\u00a0through\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>reimagining<\/em>\u00a0the conditions of the\u00a0world, and\u00a0enacting\u00a0these alternative imaginaries through propositional\u00a0aesthetico-political experimentation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0a\u00a0focus on relation,\u00a0collectivity, and\u00a0coalitionality, such\u00a0an\u00a0understanding of institutional practice involves\u00a0steering\u00a0away from\u00a0(western-modern)\u00a0conventions premised on disinterested spectatorship, expert culture, disciplinary divisions, and representation,\u00a0among others. It similarly avoids\u00a0the (colonial-acquisitive) paternalist,\u00a0instrumentalizing, and depoliticizing\u00a0attitudes toward\u00a0communities\u00a0that\u00a0customarily\u00a0prevail across much of the art world\u00a0in the global north.\u00a0How can an art institution\u00a0circumnavigate these\u00a0sticky\u00a0tropes\u00a0so that a form of\u00a0solidarity\u00a0with\u00a0its\u00a0community\u00a0can\u00a0emerge\u00a0to guide its\u00a0institutional work? One that\u00a0nonetheless\u00a0recognizes that the art institution is always\u00a0already\u00a0implicated in\u00a0the\u00a0production of\u00a0inequalities and disenfranchisement? One that respects\u00a0that\u00a0the community\u00a0exists\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0body of relations decidedly distinct from\u00a0this\u00a0institutional\u00a0establishment?\u00a0What forms of\u00a0being together otherwise\u00a0can be practiced\u00a0in\u00a0and with\u00a0the cultural\u00a0institution\u00a0to\u00a0come?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Driven by these concerns, BAK is\u00a0collaboratively\u00a0rethinking\u00a0the\u00a0art institution into a\u00a0community portal.\u00a0A porous gateway out of (and back into) the \u201cnormal order of things\u201d of current conjuncture,\u00a0the portal is what disrupts the spatial and temporal politics of this \u201cnormalcy\u201d to open a (momentary) possibility to leave\u00a0its unfreedoms\u00a0behind,\u00a0mobilizing\u00a0unforeseen forms of encounters and otherwise improbable\u00a0political subjectivities. Understanding such encounters as instances of\u00a0collective\u00a0<em>anticipatory learning\u00a0<\/em>for and of the not-yet,\u00a0here is\u00a0where alternatives to today\u2019s realities can be prefigured, rehearsed, and lived\u2014<em>as if\u00a0it\u00a0were possible<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As these processes are underway, the talk consists of tentative notes from BAK\u2019s collaborative work and ongoing conversations.
