New World Academy #5: Stateless Democracy

The New World Academy is an educational platform for art and politics founded by artist Jonas Staal and BAK. From 12–15 January 2016 fifty students participated in its fifth program at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

With help of Ronahi Muhamad (Kurdish Women’s Movement) and Mazlum Django (Democratic Union Party, PYD) they explored the ideals of stateless democracy in the Kurdish revolutionary movement and its effect on new forms of artistic and cultural production. In Unstated (or, Living Without Approval), an installation offers insights into the resulting project propositions of the students involved.

Usufructuaries of earth
Chapter one: exhibition

The exhibition foregrounds the artist’s collaborative approach to bringing together ecological, feminist, and decolonial knowledges and practices that put forward ideologies of usufruct, unhinging property-relations from the idiom of individuated possession and toward forms of common userships between humans and other-than-humans.
