Huisje, Boompje, Beestje (D.A.F.O.N.T.)
Day 1: Huisje, Boompje, Beestje with Glenda Martinus
In this rare masterclass, retired teacher and artist Glenda Martinus teaches participants a thing or two about painting with Microsoft Word. Martinus shares tips, tricks, and secrets on how to use this software to its unexpected potential as a drawing tool. Participants learn how to draw three basic objects—a house, a tree, and an animal—in a seemingly innocent exercise that perhaps contains more layered social commentary. Drawing the worlds we desire does not require expensive tools or education, simply a curiosity to understand how the monster’s tools can topple the house of the master.
Day 2: (D.A.F.O.N.T.) with Jeanine van Berkel

Typeface
According to current modernist design education, the popular font catalog dafont.com is not a valuable or professional place to find typography. But it is where many people, with a limited knowledge of what is “good” design, find the letters they use to write and celebrate and study and go about the business of everyday life. In this training, participants throw out the idea that nostalgia, joy, lack of education, color, feelings, and fun are not acceptable. We have the G.U.T.S. to honor our true pleasures, despite their lack of representation in the canon. We write acronyms that make us laugh and do design that makes them cringe. We talk about the things that give us pain in the education we are receiving that tells us our pleasure has no place in “civilized” contexts. Oh, and we make a poster.
