artist

Claudia Martínez Garay is an artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, print media, video, and installation. Her work deals with the sociopolitical memory and history of Perú. Through her work, she seeks to challenge the persistence of the colonialist frameworks and reviews (un-)official narratives in relation to what is kept in archives and collections. She seeks to understand Andean culture and brown bodies through remnants such as imagery and artifacts usually looted and kept abroad. Between 2016–2017, she was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Solo exhibitions include: Caminos de Liberación, GRIMM, Amsterdam, 2021; Ten Thousand Things, Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing, 2020; and I WILL OUTLIVE YOU, GRIMM, New York, 2018.  Her work has been presented at several group exhibitions such as at SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, 2021; Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany, 2020; Museum Albertinum, Dresden, 2020; Museo del Barrio, New York, 2019; the 16th Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul, 2019; the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Yekateringburg, 2019; the Aichi Trienniale, Nagoya, 2019; the 12th Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai, 2018; and New Museum Triennial, New York, 2018. She lives and works in Amsterdam and Lima.
