Artist & musician

Paul Purgas is an artist and musician working with sound, performance, and installation. Purgas is one half of the electronic music project Emptyset (with James Ginzburg) that delves into the sonic possibilities of electroacoustic and computer music, architecture, and performance. Trained as an architect, Purgas’s projects have been presented at Serpentine Gallery, Tate Modern, Kettle’s Yard, and Spike Island. His ongoing research into the history of electronic music and design in South Asia formed the basis of the recent BBC Radio 3 documentary Electronic India and the touring exhibition We Found Our Own Reality. Writings include essays for the Unsound: Undead collection (Urbanomic and MIT Press) and contributions to the critical journal Audimat. Recent performances with Emptyset include Sonic Acts, Wien Modern, and Berghain for Transmediale 2020. Purgas lives and works in London.
