Ilgın Hancıoğlu

Ilgın Hancıoğlu is an artist and researcher, currently assisting artist İnci Eviner in various projects alongside making independent short animations. Her interests encompass the storytelling potential of public spaces and authorities’ manifestations in them, as well as speculative biology and experimental animation. During the Fellowship for Situated Practice, she aims to explore places and routes of uneasiness throughout the city, in conversation with the experiences of other fellows in the program. In order to question the authorities’ status in such sites of restlessness, she intends to seed sequential visual clues for walkers-by to see and compose into new meanings. The clues will hint to a mysterious and fantastical grand figure who seems to “have just passed by”, hoping to lure citizens and by-passers into questioning their positions against, under, or in compliance with the power of this wondrous creature. Her animations have been screened at Filmmor Women’s Film Festival, 2020; Bebop Chanel Selection, 2019; Milano Mobile Film Festival; 2019 and Canlandiranlar Film Festival, 2019. She lives and works in İstanbul and Mersin, and is part of the Istanbul Bienali Research and Production Program, Istanbul, in the Fellowship for Situated Practice.
