Alexandra Karyn

Alexandra Karyn is an artist, art teacher, and activist. She currently teaches information and interpretation in art and design as well as conceptual writing, and light approach classes at Erudio Indonesia, Jakarta. Karyn is one of the initiators of the environmental activism coalition Jeda Untuk Iklim (Global Climate Strike) and is also actively involved in the Extinction Rebellion Indonesia movement. In her work and research, Karyn mainly explores the relationship dynamics between humans and their environments through the medium of text, situation, and film. Her other frequent inquiries revolve around the trialogue of memory, stillness, and void. For her further and concurrent research to develop at the BAK Fellowship program, she is investigating care pedagogy as the foundation for a climate-resilient community-based coastal school and garden in North Jakarta. This syllabus aims to encourage mutual encounters, learnings, reflections, and actions which strive towards achieving climate and social justice, whilst advocating for symbiotic autonomy and regenerative engagement. This space also hopes to facilitate the local and marginalized coastal population to exchange ways of life with volunteers to create a caring, pollinated, and fruitful community in a safe and trustworthy environment. Selected exhibitions and publications include: I wanna dance with somebody (who loves me) . . .*, Rubanah Underground Hub, Jakarta, 2020; Bearing Witness, Rumah Tangga, Depok, 2019; the search for a place_space (2019); Exi(s)t #7: From Another Time, Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace, Jakarta, 2018; Index: Newspaper Vol. 01 (2018); circling:writing (2016); and knowledge + oneself (2015). Karyn lives and works in Jakarta and is part of the GUDsel at Gudskul, Jakarta in the Fellowship for Situated Practice.
