Art Utrecht Open Weekend [now extended!]

In former bookstore Broese, Utrecht

From 12 to 14 June 2020, 12–18 hrs (Saturday until 22.00 hrs), and in the consecutive weekends, 20 & 21 June and 27 & 28 June 2020, Art Utrecht organizes an Open Weekend, with a presentation by various Utrecht-based art institutions in the former bookstore Broese, Oudegracht 169, Utrecht. Art Utrecht is a platform and network of Utrecht visual art institutions in Utrecht.

BAK is happy to be one of the participants in the Open Weekend, presenting a videoregistration of the work Universal Anthem by Société Réaliste, as performed by the Zuilens Fanfarecorps. This performance took place in several locations in Utrecht on 1 May 2016, in the framework of BAK’s exhibition Unstated (or, Living Without Approval). One of these locations was the Stadhuisbrug, located right in front of Broese.

Universal Anthem (2013) is a score written for 12 instruments, based on the mathematical medium of the national anthems of the 193 member states of the United Nations. Working with Frédéric Mauclère, Société Réaliste developed a computer program which is able to count median musical transcriptions. It was then used to create the “averaged” UN anthem, which was adapted to an orchestra with the help of composers Cora Miron and Horváth Balázs.

Practical information:
Art Utrecht has a Corona protocol in place for the weekend at Broese, including only one household allowed per 10 m2. For more information, check the Art Utrecht website.

Usufructuaries of earth
Chapter one: exhibition

The exhibition foregrounds the artist’s collaborative approach to bringing together ecological, feminist, and decolonial knowledges and practices that put forward ideologies of usufruct, unhinging property-relations from the idiom of individuated possession and toward forms of common userships between humans and other-than-humans.
