On Sunday 1 March 2020, come to BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht for a curator tour of the newly opened Tony Cokes: To Live as Equals, an exhibition and public program with and around the work of artist Tony Cokes! Curator Thiago de Paula Souza will elaborate on the concept behind the exhibition, and take visitors past some of the pivotal works in the show.
On the exhibition:
Tony Cokes: To Live as Equals brings together selected video works from the past 30 years, immersing viewers in the audiovisual language that artist Tony Cokes has developed over his career, which typically blurs aesthetics of pop music videos and visual art.
The exhibition and program trace Cokes’s unique formation of critique through visual and textual codes, and his changing relationship to archival material over several different global historical moments. From these historical events, the works draw a through line to the present of systemic violence and ever-more-complex forms of social control. What are ways of seeing and responding to the seemingly endless cycles of inequality and oppression? How, then, could one break those cycles and envision living as equals?
Tony Cokes: To Live as Equals opens on 28 February 2020, 18.00 hrs at BAK, and is on view until 17 May 2020.
Tickets: €6 regular/€3 student discount, including entry to the exhibition. Limited capacity, order now via Eventbrite.
