Based on their different experiences of working in the Palestinian refugee camp of Burj al-Shamali, through this training activist Hamada al-Joumah and artist Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh investigate avenues for collective working processes that foster self-determination.
For those living in a condition of transience, such as refugees, migrants, the stateless, and the politically dispossessed, the question of self-determination – the power or ability to make a decision for oneself, but also as a nation or people to determine its own form of government –stands at the heart of any discussion of governance. Yet it is also an extremely problematic concept, as it can function as a neoliberal device for shifting responsibility to the individual, and thus rendering structural violence invisible. What are different ways of understanding processes of self-determination in different contexts? And how do people organize and work collectively in these various circumstances?
